" Port au Choix fisherman says his livelihood has been lost, along with his burned out boat 17 "

It's tough to loose one's boat, but the good side of it, is that it is one less boat that can be used to kill innocent seals.

I wish all the boats burned! Read and weep for the inhumane butchery that is going on out there:

"A sealer near us quickly clubbed every seal within a small radius to immobilize each of the pups, and then dragged the bodies to the center of his circle. One by one he flipped a seal on its back and skinned it. If the seal flipped around or fought against the skinning he'd flip it back to its stomach, club it several more times and then finish the skinning." -- IFAW Hunt Monitor

How can these barbarians sleep at night?

The fact that these companies are willing to kill animals for the sake for their fur is nonsensical.

Without seal fur, we won't die. There are other ways to earn money besides hunting for seal fur.

What alternate jobs would you suggest?

Sasha, humans are incredibly smart and talented, and none of us are limited in what we're able to learn and accomplish. I've lived in two countries, been homeless, and changed careers six times, but I somehow just keep on ticking. Yes, people in some areas have fewer opportunities than others, but as a Canadian taxpayer I know I'm contributing to job retraining programs, programs to encourage entrepreneurs, etc. When the whaling industry had severe limitation imposed, many of those former hunters turned into eco-tour guides and found they made a lot more money. Despite the difficult weather, seal hunters could easily form a tourism group, for example, to earn money from showing off the seals instead of killing them. And that's just off the top of my head. Do sealers really want new occupations and they just can't find any? Maybe I should start a consultation service, but I think many of them would be reluctant to have to learn a new job unless forced to. It's just human nature to want to stick with what is familiar.

You're right. My point is, what jobs are better? Cutting trees? Drilling for oil? Catching the few fish left? Tourism is helpful, but it doesn't work everywhere. Whales attract tourists because they come in summer--I'm betting far fewer people will go through the wilds of Canada in early spring. If such a business got started anyway, more power to it.

I don't like sealing, and I want to see some viable alternatives. We just need to consider what would actually work.

Why IFAW?

Why IFAW IFAW has led the fight to stop the cruel slaughter of seal pups since the 1960's, resulting in the import ban of newborn whitecoat seal pelts in 1985. Today, with offices in 15 countries, IFAW is the world's leading animal welfare organization, fighting to save seals both on the ice and through vital scientific and market research.
