Stop the Seal Hunt: Canadian Senator Mac Harb Introduces Legislation To End The Seal Hunt

For all of us working to end Canada's commercial seal hunt, an historic moment was marked today. For the first time ever, a Canadian poliician has introduced legislation to put an end to the largest remaining marine mammal slaughter in the world: Canada's commercial seal hunt. The Honourable Senator Mac Harb (Liberal) successfully introduced Bill S-229, casually referred to as the "Harb Seal Bill", for first reading in the Canadian Senate. The bill would bring an end to the commercial hunting of seals in Canadian waters, while protecting the rights of aboriginal peoples to hunt seals. I had the privilege of sitting in the Senate gallery this afternoon to witness this event, and was shocked by the reception the Senators bill received. A few Senators boooed and cried "shame, shame!" The bill was tabled, but no Senator was willing to second it, meaning it will not be debated until a seconder can be found. It was clear that the Senate does not want to have the public debate that is needed about Canada's commercial seal hunt... one wonders what they are so afraid of? But Senator Harb was unperturbed. He truly is a brave and courageous man, and will not be easily discouraged by his fellow Senators or Liberal party members. He knows that an end to Canada's commercial seal hunt is backed by the majority of Canadians, and supported by sound economic arguments. Please take a moment to write to Canadian Senators, and let them know you support Bill S-229 - The Harb Seal Bill. The more pressure we can put on the Senate, the more they will realize this important piece of legislation deserves to be debated by Canadian Parliamentarians. Let's act now!

Finally someone is trying to do something in the government. I tried to send the email to the senators but they were returned. I will keep trying! The time has come to end this ridiculous hunt!

Like most Canadians, and most people around the world, I have had a GUTFUL of the seal hunt (That's Aussie for fed up) and as for Gail Shea, what can a person expect of that stupid woman? I am glad that Mac Harb is not willing to give up so easily, and if enough pressure is brought to bear, maybe we can see an end to this grisly ritual. I'll sleep better once it is that's for sure.

I live in the United States. I was appalled at the horrific slaughtering of seals. Some of them weren't even dead before they skinned them. I, as a US citizen, will boycott Canada and ask that my friends and family and even some Europeans that I know to boycott Canada. I will also ask our President Obama to boycott Canada. Canadian fisherman are doing a horrible thing and Minister Shea is in agreement with them. SHAME ON THE FISHERMAN AND MINISTER SHEA. What kind of people are you???? Praise goes to Senator Harb for pushing legislation to stop this inhumane slaughter of seals.
